Ecuador arrive at a fifth World Cup as one of the tournament's hardest teams to break down. Here is the predicted starting XI for Sebastián Beccacece's side, framed as informed speculation rather than a confirmed line-up.
The predicted Ecuador XI
Beccacece favours a 4-2-3-1 built from a settled back four and a double pivot, with Moisés Caicedo screening in front. Reading across the squad and recent selections, the likely XI looks like this.
Ecuador predicted XI (4-2-3-1):
- Goalkeeper: Hernán Galíndez
- Defence: Joel Ordóñez, Willian Pacho, Piero Hincapié, Pervis Estupiñán
- Double pivot: Moisés Caicedo, Pedro Vite
- Attacking band: Nilson Angulo, Kendry Páez, John Yeboah
- Striker: Enner Valencia
That shape matches the predicted line-ups published by Sports Mole and Sports Illustrated ahead of the opener.
There is genuine flexibility here. Opta Analyst notes Beccacece used seven different formations across qualifying, deploying a back four in 10 matches and a back three in the other eight, so a switch to three centre-backs with Gonzalo Plata and Félix Torres involved is well within range.
How they reached the United States
Ecuador qualified as CONMEBOL runners-up, finishing second in South American qualifying behind only Argentina. They did so with the meanest defence in the section, conceding just five goals across 18 matches and keeping 13 clean sheets, the strongest record of any side in the region, per Opta Analyst.
That was achieved despite a three-point deduction. As Sports Illustrated reports, Ecuador still posted their best-ever qualifying campaign and went undefeated across their final 11 games.
Beccacece, who took charge in August 2024, built that platform quickly. The improvement under him is the main reason Ecuador are spoken of as a possible surprise package.
The spine that drives the XI
The individual quality runs through the middle of the pitch. Caicedo was named Chelsea's Player of the Year for 2024-25 and is, in Opta's words, the heartbeat of the side, leading on tackles and interceptions.
The centre-back pairing is a tournament-grade one. Willian Pacho enjoyed another strong season with PSG, while Piero Hincapié joined Arsenal on loan from Bayer Leverkusen in the 2025 summer window. At left-back, Pervis Estupiñán made a historic move, becoming AC Milan's first Ecuadorian player after his switch from Brighton.
The questions are further forward. Enner Valencia, the all-time record scorer at 36, remains the focal point but is a fitness watch, and Sports Mole rates him a minor doubt for the opener. Behind him, teenager Kendry Páez carries much of the creative burden. You can compare the squads in our Sides tool.
What the predicted XI faces in Group E
Ecuador have a tough draw in Group E alongside Germany, Ivory Coast and Curaçao. They open against Ivory Coast on 14 June at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, then meet Curaçao and Germany, per Sky Sports.
The defensive base gives them a clear path. If the back four holds and Caicedo controls midfield, a low-scoring group is the kind Ecuador are built to navigate.
